How to become a UNESCO Global Geopark?
UNESCO Global Geoparks are established through a bottom-up process involving all relevant local and regional stakeholders and authorities in the area (e.g. landowners, community groups, tourism providers, indigenous people, and local organizations).
This process requires a firm commitment by the local communities, solid local multiple partnerships with long-term public and political support, and a comprehensive strategy to meet the communities鈥 goals while showcasing and protecting the area鈥檚 geological heritage.
A UNESCO World Geopark does not involve only geology. Its purpose is to explore, develop and celebrate the relationships between this geological heritage and all other natural, cultural and intangible heritage aspects of the area. It is about reconnecting, in every way, human society to the Earth and celebrating how the planet and its long history of 4.6 billion years have shaped every aspect of our lives and our societies.
The title 鈥淯NESCO World Geopark鈥 is not a legislative designation. The UNESCO World Geopark status does not imply restrictions on any economic activity within a UNESCO World Geopark, provided that such activity complies with indigenous, local, regional and/or national laws.
The UNESCO World Geopark designation is granted for a period of four years. After this period, the functioning and quality of each Geopark are thoroughly re-examined in a revalidation process.
