On 14 December, the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution on Culture and Sustainable Development, as sponsored by the G-77 plus China.

The new resolution  affirms culture’s contribution to the three dimensions of sustainable development in the follow up debate to the new for Sustainable Development   that has adopted a comprehensive, far-reaching and people-centered set of universal and transformative Sustainable Development Goals and targets. In this context, the text acknowledges further the natural and cultural diversity of the world and recognizes that cultures and civilizations can contribute to, and are crucial enablers of, sustainable development.

Through this adoption, the international community welcomed the inclusion in the 2030 Agenda of several targets reflecting the contribution of culture to sustainable development, while recalling that the sustainable development goals and targets are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development.

It also noted that policies responsive to cultural contexts can yield better, sustainable, inclusive and equitable development outcomes, and that both the economic and social dimensions of poverty can be addressed through cultural heritage and the cultural and creative industries.

It has been decided that consideration will be given to in the follow-up and review framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Intergovernmental bodies and organizations of the United Nations System, among others, are invited to promote capacity-building at all levels for the development of a dynamic cultural and creative sector and to enhance international cooperation, in supporting the efforts of the developing countries towards the development, strengthening and consolidation of cultural industries, cultural tourism and culture-related microenterprises.

91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ been further invited to continue to provide support, facilitate financing and assist Member States, upon their request, in developing their national capacities to optimize the contribution of culture to sustainable development. UNESCO will also continue to assess, in consultation with Member States, the contribution of culture to the achievement of sustainable development through the compilation of quantitative data, including indicators and statistics, with a view to informing development policies and relevant reports.
