Leadership in schools is indeed one of the most talked about topics in education.  However, school leadership is yet to be elevated to the global education agenda. There are a variety of approaches to the issue, from a hierarchical focus on the principal to a more realistic understanding that every teacher has a leadership role to play in learning.

On December 05, the GEM Report and Education International (EI) will convene a consultation on teacher and school leadership to gather experiences and insights from teachers and school leaders from around the world to inform the content of the GEM Report.

The objectives of the consultation include:

  1. Share the early thinking of the GEM Report team in preparation for the 2024 GEM Report
  2. Provide a space for participants to provide substantive feedback to the proposed lines of research with a particular focus on teacher leadership, school leadership and leadership development/support
  3. Identify examples and case studies that illustrate good leadership or supportive leadership environments/practices that could feature in the Report

The session will take place in two parts. The first segment will include a presentation of the 2024 Report’s Concept Note by the Report’s Global Thematic Lead followed by a response from EI leadership outlining EI’s ambitions for the Report, where the viewpoints and experiences of EI’s members could enrich the framing.

A second segment will split participants into smaller group discussions led-by GEM Report researchers and EI staff examining a set of questions focused on teacher leadership, selection and working conditions of school principals, leadership training and development. The dialogues will allow participants to share observations and experiences from their unique perspectives/experiences on teacher and school leadership in action.
