United Nations General Assembly and 2023 SDG Summit

The GEM Report team will join several events during the 78th Session of the General Assembly and the 2023 SDG Summit held at UN Headquarters in New York. GEM Report representatives will input into discussions on SDG 4 data and monitoring, conversations on the importance of education to meet the sustainable development goals and debates on the role of technology in education.

Digital Transformation Collaborative: A year of coordinated action - 10:00-11:30 AM EDT
A presentation of the recent 2023 GEM Report by Senior Researcher Priya Joshi will frame the challenges and opportunities for technology in education.
Event hosted by the Global Education Coalition and Digital Transformation Collaborative at the Microsoft UN Offices.

Critical Perspectives at the Midpoint of SDG 4: Progress, Promises, and Pitfalls - IJED Special-Issue launch - 9:00 AM 10:30 AM EDT (Online)
The GEM Report's Director Manos Antoninis will join other featured authors from the special issue to speak broadly on their topics and share their critical perspectives at this important moment in the UN’s development agenda.
The side event is hosted by the SDG Academy, the University of Hawaii, and Monash University.

GEM Report Senior Researcher Priya Joshi will join a discussion hosted by the SAP and the World Organization of the Scout Movement to discuss skills and opportunities for the next generation.
Tuesday 19th September
SDG4: where we are and what we demand - 08:30 -10:00 AM EDT (Online)
The GEM Report's Director Manos Antoninis will join a virtual side-event hosted by the Global Campaign for Education and affiliates. Mr Antoninis will respond to perspectives shared by GCE regional members on the progress made by states towards SDG4, and the main challenges to achieve its targets.

Roadblocks to Achieving SDG4: The Impact of Education Financing Gaps and Lack of Domestic Resources on Reaching the SDG4 targets - (3:00 PM EDT)
The GEM Report's Director Manos Antoninis will moderate an event co-hosted by the Education Above All Foundation, the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the Government of Sierra Leone.
The event is aimed to provide concrete evidence of the impact of the underinvestment in education due to debt servicing, decreased ODA allocations, and insufficient domestic funding and how this lack of education financing has a greater impact on the long-term economic and societal health of low and lower-middle income countries.
The event will take place at the Qatar Mission.

GEM Report Senior Researcher Priya Joshi will join a panel discussion on Incorporating Sustainable Goals and Practices in the Future of Work in an event hosted by the Business Council of International Understanding. Ms Joshi's remarks will touch upon the need for improved professional capacity and collaboration across sectors to meet the sustainable development goals.
