Big Results Now in Education (BRNEd) Program
The Big Results Now in Education (BRNEd) Program was a transformational government-led initiative launched in Tanzania in 2013 to improve the quality of basic education. The program aimed to bring about dramatic improvements in examination results across Tanzanias 20,000 public schools by adopting learning-oriented education reforms. BRNEd focused on several key areas, including creating transparency on 3R (reading, writing, and arithmetic) skills, improving teacher conditions, and enhancing student learning environments. The program utilized the Delivery Approach, a performance management methodology popularized by the UK government, to implement complex and politically sensitive education reforms1. BRNEd was supported by a results-based financing model, with over $250 million made available through a Program for Results (PforR) financing instrument co-funded by DFID, the World Bank, and the Swedish Government.
