UNESCO joins Salzburg Global Seminar鈥檚 efforts to nurture diverse new voices in public policy

UNESCO showcased its support for inclusive cultural policies at the 2024 Public Policies New Voices Europe Conference, focusing on diversity and participatory governance.

UNESCO shared its experience in supporting inclusive cultural policies at the 鈥淭oward Inclusive Democracy: Nurturing Diverse Leadership in Public Policy鈥. Held from 14 to 18 October 2024, the conference seeks to cultivate inclusive democracy, address systemic inequities, and create a network for change. On this occasion, UNESCO demonstrated its pioneering actions in harnessing the power of culture for sustainable development. The conference brought together Salzburg Global Seminar Fellows鈥攁 cohort of 30 emerging policy leaders from across Europe鈥攁s well as established decision makers committed to equitable and representative policymaking.

UNESCO Culture Sector representative, Karalyn Monteil, led a session on participatory policymaking on 13 October 2024 entitled 鈥淗ow to leverage the diversity of cultural expressions and creative industries to strengthen inclusive democratic governance鈥. In this session, she highlighted the importance of the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions as well as the 2022 MONDIACULT Declaration, which called upon anchoring culture in public policies. She raised awareness of UNESCO resources including publication of Global Reports on Re|Shaping Cultural Policies and UNESCO鈥檚 Policy Monitoring Platforma centralized repository of over 4700 policies and measures to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions around the globeLastly, she participated in a series of mentoring sessions with all 30 fellows and share lessons learned from supporting local to global UNESCO initiatives for participatory policymaking.

The Salzburg Global Seminar was founded on the same principles as UNESCO to foster intercultural dialogue and exchange for peacebuilding and sustainable development,

The conference included a series of workshops, panel discussions, interactive sessions, and networking opportunities, which allowed participants to gain valuable insights, knowledge, and skills necessary to navigate the intricacies of a career in public policy. It is part of an annual programme that aims to foster international, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational exchange by bringing together a vibrant community of leaders working in the field public policy in government, the private sector and in civil society. 

The Salzburg Global Seminar is an independent non-profit organization founded in 1947 with a mission to challenge future and current leaders to shape a better world. They have welcomed over 40,000 fellows from 170 countries to take part in programmes designed to provide a global lab for innovation and transformation.
