Amid Covid-19, Indonesian Film Actors Discuss Women in Indonesian Film and Cinema through Virtual KAFEIN-UNESCO Conference

Balanced and equitable representation of both men and women is one of the critical conditions of the diversity of cultural expression, a principle hailed by UNESCO through its 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. There is no diversity if one side of the voice is missing from artistic creation. While the debate on gender mainstreaming has reached many areas of our society, cultural industry sector has remained rather slow in embracing the principle. Film is one such sector where acute gender-based disparity and abuse came to our attention in recent times. However, effective policy action has been often slow with "lack of data and evidence" as an excuse.
In partnership with the association of film researchers, Pengkaji Film Indonesia or "KAFEIN", UNESCO Jakarta looks into the opportunity of developing a gender-disaggregated data collection framework to track whether men and women avail of equal and equitable opportunities in terms of, among others, access to training and education, employment, and funding to develop their career within the film industry. Such data collection framework should serve as a basis to regularly monitor the trend in the sector, identify the policy lacunae, and track the effectiveness of future government interventions. This activity is part of "Mobilizing Film Professionals for Regional Cooperation in Asia" project supported by the Government of Japan.
Amid COVID-19 social distancing measures, this online virtual conference aims to gather the voice of film professionals to identify critical gender issues to be monitored in the film sector. To do so, it has gathered the papers and video message from 17 experts to contribute to the panel discussions on "When gender-study meets film studies"; "Young filmmakers"; "Career"; "Patriarchy and women representation", "Adaptation", "History", "Documentary and Web Series", and "Female Filmmakers’ Works". The registered participants can access the presentations and leave their comments/questions. Inputs provided by the experts and participants will be further analyzed by KAFEIN and UNESCO Jakarta to improve the gender-disaggregated data collection framework.
The conference can be accessed at between June and August 2020.
