UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova marked International Literacy Day in Dhaka, Bangladesh, by visiting the Motijheel Government Primary School‎, after jointly awarding the 2014 literacy prizes with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Ms Bokova stopped in a class of five-year olds who sang and acted out songs and showed their drawings, before moving onto English and Science classes for fifth and sixth graders. Crowding onto the school benches, she listened to students reading and responding to questions on disaster risk preparedness.

The school counts 2959 students – close to 50% girls – and 42 teachers, and prides itself on active learning, community engagement,  regular assessment of student performance, arts and crafts activities, and special attention to slow learners.

Asking girl students about their future ambitions, most said they aspired to be teachers, with a few hoping to become doctors, scientists and researchers, and even to serve in the army.

Throngs of parents lined the street to bid farewell to the Director-General as she departed from the school.
