Education and Literacy at the heart of Director-General鈥檚 official visit to the Dominican Republic

From 14 to 16 January, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, is traveling to the Dominican Republic for an official visit. She is expected to meet with the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr Danilo Medina, the Minister of the Presidency, Mr Gustavo Montalvo, and the Minister of External Relations, Mr Andr猫s Navarro Garc铆a, as well as other ministers and national authorities.
The Director-General will also meet with the First Lady of the Dominican Republic, Ms. C谩ndida Montilla de Medina, and along with her, she will visit a centre of comprehensive care for disabled children (CAID) in Santo Domingo, under the responsibility of the First Lady.
The Director-General is also expected to meet with a number of high level government officials working in the fields of competence of UNESCO, including the Minister of Education, Mr Carlos Amarante Baret, with whom she will visit Padre Eulalio Antonio Arias School, in the framework of the National Literacy Plan 鈥淨uisqeuya Aprende Contigo鈥, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Ms Ligia Amada Melo Quezada and the Minister of Culture and President of the Dominican National Commission for UNESCO, Mr Jos茅 Antonio Rodriguez. Irina Bokova will also meet with the UN Country Team and Resident Coordinator.
At an encounter with 4.000 to 5.000 volunteers and beneficiaries of the National Literacy Plan, the Director-General will meet Mr. Pedro Luis Castellanos, Director of Special Programmes of the Presidency and Coordinator of the technical team on literacy. On this occasion, the Director-General will participate in the inauguration of the National Congress of Literacy and Adult Education.
The Director-General will also hold a meeting with the President of the Senate, Ms. Cristina Lizardo, the President of the House of Representatives, Mr. Abel Mart铆nez, and the Members of Parliament close to UNESCO鈥檚 activities.
In the Dominican Republic, the Director-General will take part in an event organized by the Ministry of Culture in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of UNESCO. She will also visit the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, inscribed on UNESCO鈥檚 World Heritage List in 1990, with the Minister of Culture.
The Director-General will be accompanied by the Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Dominican Republic to UNESCO, H.E. Ms Laura Faxas.
