Honoring the Art of Maqom as a shared musical heritage of the Silk Roads

At the invitation of Mr Ozodbek Nazarbekov, Minister of Culture of Uzbekistan, Amb. Simona-Mirela Miculescu, President of the 42nd session of the General Conference of UNESCO, fulfilled an official visit in Uzbekistan, from 26 to 28 June 2024. In this context, she delivered a speech at the Opening Ceremony of the 2nd International Maqom Art Forum, in the presence of H.E. Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan, and high-level representatives from 80 participating countries. 

The International Maqom Art Forum was initiated in 2018, under the patronage of UNESCO, with the objective to ensure the preservation and development of this millennial art, as well as to promote intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity through supporting creativity.

Maqom Art, inspired by a philosophy of self-nourishment and spiritual contemplation, is considered as an integral part of the musical heritage of the Silk Roads, while the 鈥楽hahmaqom鈥 Cultural Heritage of Humanity and 2008, and 2009, respectively. The Programme of the Forum included Maqom performances by living heritage bearers from more than 80 countries. Scientific conferences with the participation of well-known musicologists, composers and artists were also held as part of the Forum.

As it has happened throughout millenia, the Maqom art, heritage and traditions are providing us also the meaningful opportunity to reflect on the pivotal importance of arts, sciences and culture in shaping, refining and reinforcing the dialogue among civilizations, and to celebrate cultural diversity. This Forum exemplifies your dedication to strengthening regional connections, by revitalizing the splendid musical tradition of Maqom. Building communities around cultural symbols is essential for fostering unity amid unprecedented global crises.

The President applauded also the fact that the Forum took place in Zaamin, an area that experiences a true transformation, combining rapid modernization with respectful preservation of its rich natural heritage, as it is the oldest nature reserve in Uzbekistan. 

The lush and stunning natural landscapes that surround and embrace us here, are a form of art that we have a moral duty to protect, as, let us not forget, Nature is our most precious masterpiece.

While in Uzbekistan, the President also briefly visited the historic city of Samarkand, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
