Linking SDGs and Human Rights for Effective Monitoring and Advocacy
UNESCO and the Indonesian National Human Rights Institution (KomnasHAM) are collaborating with and to deliver a workshop on linking SDGs and Human Rights: Demographic Trends and Disability Rights on Tuesday, 22nd of January at JS Luwansa Hotel, Jakarta.
The SDGs and Human Rights are linked and mutually reinforcing. Human rights provide insight and guidance for tackling the complex and multidimensional goals of the 2030 Agenda. Conversely, the SDGs can serve as a tangible, results-oriented instrument for the realization of human rights.
To take advantage of these inherent positive connections, UNESCO and the Human Rights Working Group of the UN Country Team in Indonesia developed an online tool for practical application: , currently managed by KomnasHAM. The tool is designed to monitor progress towards developmental objectives of the 2030 Agenda from the human rights perspective, using the suggested human rights based indicators.
To apply this tool to concrete human rights issues, PSHK and Lembaga Demografi have been investigating the interlinkages between specific SDGs and the corresponding human rights obligations of Indonesia. PSHK has focused on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the 2016 National Law on Disability and their relationship with the national framework of SDGs. Lembaga Demografi has used the national demographic trends projected until 2030 and beyond to analyze the way they are set to impact the implementation of SDGs and the realization of the various socio-economic rights.
The workshop will bring together the key national stakeholders from the SDG Secretariat (Ministry of National Development Planning), Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Ministry of Social Affairs, as well as the civil society – various NGOs and think tanks working in the development and human rights fields, to engage in the exchanges about the findings of the analytical work. UNESCO will capture the outcomes of these exchanges and reflect them in the online analytical framework linking SDGs and Human Rights for further efforts of advocacy and capacity building in this area.
