UNESCO is pleased that beneficiaries from our ongoing project in the province of Catamarca, Argentina, recently took part in a national exhibition celebrating artisanal heritage called: La Ruta del Telar, held at the Palacio Libertad in Buenos Aires.

This exhibition, organized by the Secretariat of Culture of Argentina and the Government of Catamarca, showcases over 70 handcrafted pieces produced by artisans from across the province. The event celebrates the diversity and excellence of traditional craftwork, bringing together the work of over 40 artisans from localities along the Loom Route such as Belén, Santa María, and Antofagasta de la Sierra.

Among the featured works were textiles created by artisans who have participated in a capacity-development initiative led by UNESCO and Alwaleed Philanthropies, in partnership with the Federal Investment Council, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca. This project promotes the combined enhancement of ancestral knowledge and contemporary skills, supporting artisans in the professionalization of traditional practices and strengthening their role as cultural custodians and economic agents.

Their contributions to the exhibition reflect both the skills developed through recent training and the vitality of long-standing traditions. Pieces on display included finely woven ponchos made from sustainably sourced vicuña fiber, textiles adorned with national symbols such as the Sol de Mayo, and works showcasing intricate techniques such as the guarda atada (ikat) technique. Each piece is a testament to the artisans’ connection to place, heritage, and evolving creative expression.

This moment aligned with the beginning of the second phase of UNESCO’s initiative in the region, which focuses on consolidating progress made throughout the project and further empowering artisan communities through capacity-building, knowledge exchange, and greater access to markets.

We commend the artisans for their dedication and creativity and look forward to continuing to support their efforts to preserve cultural heritage while advancing inclusive and sustainable development.
