Retreat for UNESCO Africa staff in Nairobi

The one-day hybrid retreat included representation from Headquarters and field offices of Abuja, Accra, Addis Ababa, Dakar, Dar Es Salaam, Harare, Juba, Kinshasa, Nairobi, Rabat, Windhoek and Yaoundé.

During the opening, the ADG thanked all staff for their continuous efforts in promoting the CI mandate, highlighting the vital role of the information and communication in achieving the sustainable development goals, especially in relation to the ongoing digital transformations such as AI and Chat GPT.
Misako Ito, Regional Advisor for CI in Africa, presented an overview of the CI structure and programs in the continent and the challenges and opportunities in implementation. Subsequent presentations focused on the , fundraising strategies, field reform and implications to CI in Africa, strategic partnerships with AU, engaging with the UN and delivering as one, with examples given of the Peacebuilding Fund in Madagascar. Other topics of discussion included:
- International Programme for the Development of Communication,
- Freedom of expression and safety of journalists,
- Media development and media in emergency,
- Media and Information Literacy,
- Innovation and digital transformation,
- Documentary heritage, and
- Access to information.
The retreat provided an opportunity for Field Office staff in Africa to interact with the ADG and HQ colleagues. In addition, share experiences from their various contexts in implementing CI work in Africa, exchange ideas and best practices in implementing as well as look for areas of collaboration to strengthen existing CI programs.
