‘Slave trade town’ to host rejoinder session on sustainability programme for community radios
Slated for December 4, 2020, the session will act as an important feedback for the whole sustainability programme to community radios (CRs) conducted from February 2019 to improve the implementation of the second phase of the upcoming project.
During the session, participants will share successes, challenging areas, future interventions and way forward in the cause of implementation of the programme in Tanzania.
The one-day session is expected to bring together 43 participants ranging from representatives from 15 community radios, mentors/trainers, TADIO representative, UNESCO staff members and representatives from the mainstream media.
The feedback session comes three years after UNESCO launched transformation and change of community radios sustainability programme in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar Archipelago in 2017. Community radios went through four sustainability packages, which are organizational/strategic plan, social sustainability, financial sustainability and communication and visibility.
The programme was conducted in two phases where the first involved 25 UNESCO supported radios and the second phase included 15 community radios.
The capacity building and mentorship plan for sustainable community radios in Tanzania was designed as a longer sustainability process carried out by UNESCO Dar es Salaam in collaboration with its community radio partners and a community radio network (TADIO).
In Tanzania, UNESCO under the SDC supported project supports 25 community radios and the Network of Community Media in Tanzania, (TADIO) an entity with 35 members comprising of 34 community radios and Pemba Press Club.
The support is meant to ensure that people in Tanzania, especially the poor, women and girls, have the capacity to make informed decisions on issues that affect their daily lives based on access to relevant, culturally appropriate, gender responsive accurate information and knowledge.
The coverage of Community radio stations under the network is 74 percent of the United Republic of Tanzania, with a total estimated population of 33 million people.
