Project
Strengthening the Capacities of Indigenous Communicators for Monitoring and Reporting on SDG 16 in Indigenous Communities of Panama

The project focuses on strengthening the capacities of indigenous communicators in Panama to monitor and report on Sustainable Development Goal 16 in their communities.
The primary target group is the inhabitants of indigenous territories in Panama, where approximately 417,559 people (12% of Panama's total population) will benefit from the development of communication access capabilities of indigenous communities and organizations through institutional plans and the promotion of the right to access communication.
Within the framework of this project, the Association Kunas Unidos por Nabguana in Panama is implementing the program "Access to information, indigenous peoples, and sustainable development". The objective of the program is to raise awareness, inform, and make visible collective actions in defense of life in indigenous territories, towards the demand for the fundamental right to communication.
To achieve this, a strategic Indigenous Communication plan has been created, which focuses on promoting greater information and awareness of the different existing indigenous rights to guarantee public access to information, strengthen the capacities of indigenous communicators in the use and management of digital radio, and promote development projects in different areas. Digital inclusion and indigenous communication are fundamental to improving the economic, social, political, and personal conditions of indigenous peoples in Panama.
Activities
Among the project activities are workshops to train indigenous communicators in monitoring and reporting on Sustainable Development Goal 16, the creation of a twelve-episode radio series directed and produced by participants, a graphic memory, and two events held within the framework of the workshop.
In addition, access to information and communication about the main issues in indigenous territories and culture will be facilitated for inhabitants of the twelve indigenous communities in Panama through the digital community radio "Voces Originarias Panamá." Periodic broadcasts on social, educational, cultural, economic, and environmental topics of interest to indigenous peoples of Panama will also be carried out, contributing to the restoration and preservation of ancestral cultures and traditions.
