UNESCO Director-General condemns the killings of journalists Edin Frangeli Alonzo López and Hugo Rolando Gutiérrez Alonzo in Guatemala

I condemn the killings of Edin Alonzo and Hugo Gutiérrez. I urge the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for crimes must not be tolerated.

Edin Alonzo and Hugo Gutiérrez managed Noticias Caballo Blanco, a Facebook news page dedicated to local news, crime, politics and social issues. They were reportedly returning from a coverage assignment riding a motorcycle, when they were shot dead.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
