The UNESCO Jakarta Office, in cooperation with the Philippines’ Department of Education (DepEd), conducted the last leg of the regional stakeholders’ meeting for the “Emergency Psychosocial Support for Secondary-aged Students Affected by Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines” project held on 29 January 2015 at DepEd Regional Office VIII, Palo, Leyte, Philippines.

Thirty seven (37) participants attended the meeting lead by Dr. Luisa Bautista-Yu, Regional Director of DepEd Regional Office VIII-Eastern Visayas. Ms. Mariel Bayangos represented the DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. DepEd Division Office officials, secondary school principal and representative teachers from DepEd Division Offices of Tacloban City, Leyte and Eastern Samar were also present and shared their experiences on post-disaster psychosocial support.

Dr. Mee Young Choi, Head of Education Unit, UNESCO Jakarta Office, welcomed and thanked the participants for investing their time for the meeting. She highlighted the commitment of UNESCO Jakarta Office in supporting the government of the Philippines through the Department of Education in its capacity building initiative especially on disaster risk reduction education.

Various stakeholders graced the meeting including the Vice President for Academic Affairs of Leyte Normal University, Education Programme Manager of Save the Children and Regional Director and Key Officials of the Department of Health Regional Office VIII-Eastern Visayas. A school visit and a meeting at Sangkahan National High School in Tacloban City happened which was attended by thirty seven (37) secondary school teachers from the said school, DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Regional Office VIII-Eastern Visayas and Division of Tacloban City officials.

The Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) sent representatives and presented the first draft of the revised psychological support training manual. The participants in the meeting were optimistic on the revised training manual. They shared interesting inputs to further enhance the revision of the training manual that was highly welcomed by the PAP.
