UNESCO’s Global Skills Academy: Advancing digital skills in the Philippines and Beyond

As technology rapidly transform the world, the need for digital skills is growing faster than ever. In Asia Pacific (APAC), around 86 million workers need to upskill or reskilled to match the pace of technological change[1]. Globally, over 60% of employees will face the same challenges by 2027. This is especially urgent for youth entering the workforce, particularly in APAC, where youth unemployment has risen above pre-pandemic levels.
To respond to these challenges and provide solutions for skilling, UNESCO organized a webinar titled “Skilling for the Era of AI: Digital training and skills development opportunities through the Global Skills Academy” on Wednesday, 12 March 2025. The event specifically targeted representatives from education and training authorities, institutions, and private sector partners. It drew participation from over 100 participants representing various institutions in the Philippines, as well as more than 200 participants from across the region. The webinar is part of the implementation of Global Skills Academy (GSA), an initiative under the UNESCO Global Education Coalition -a dynamic global platform for multistakeholder cooperation to drive education transformation and work on action-oriented and target-driven missions.
The GSA aims to equip learners with essential digital, entrepreneurial, and technical skills to enhance employability in the rapidly evolving job market. As the world adapts to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), GSA focuses on bridging the skills gap and fostering inclusive workforce development. The GSA has leveraged strategic partnerships with global industry leaders to provide free, accessible and high-quality training and mentorship programmes tailored to meet national and regional needs. Key partners include Aleph Group Inc., Festo Didactic, Junior Achievement Americas, and .
Under the GSA, Microsoft offers industry-recognized certifications through the Microsoft Learn for Educators programme, preparing students and educators with AI, cloud computing, and other essential digital skills. Aleph provides digital marketing and advertising training, equipping participants with skills for effective online engagement and AI-driven marketing strategies. Meanwhile, Festo’s LX platform delivers technical education in automation and process management, reinforcing vocational and industrial skills crucial for sustainable development.
These global partners bring valuable expertise and resources that can also support youth in the Philippines, helping expand access to quality training and ensure alignment with local priorities. Looking ahead, UNESCO is working closely with education stakeholders in the Philippines to support the implementation of GSA training programmes, assess progress and refine implementation strategies for wider reach. These discussions will help ensure that training programmes align with national priorities and effectively address industry needs, drive economic growth and digital inclusion in the Philippines.
