UNESCO launches a Youth Newsroom for South East Europe and Turkey

“Youth’s perspective is often missing in the journalistic reporting of the region. Gathering young and aspiring journalists and equipping them with additional tools to express themselves professionally is a unique opportunity for bridging this gap,” said Alma Fejzić from the Centre for Development of Youth Activism (CROA), UNESCO’s partner in Sarajevo in charge of establishing the SEE Youth Newsroom.
Gathering 31 young journalists aged between 22 and 30 from the whole region, the SEE Youth Newsroom will act as a network providing participants with concrete opportunities to work in a team and cover activities and programmes promoting freedom of expression implemented by UNESCO or the EU.  The Newsroom will serve as a platform to highlight their work and stories.

The website  established by CROA with the support of UNESCO within the EU-funded project “” presents the profile of the selected participants and the articles, videos, photos produced as part of this project.

Throughout the month of March 2021, the participants are receiving a series of training from international experts on fundamental topics, such as:

We have aimed to create a diverse training program and to bring in international experts and trainers to convey global perspectives, standards and best practices to the young journalists of the newsroom
Alma Fejzić, Centre for Development of Youth Activism (CROA)

Alma Fejzić concluded “Following those training, we expect the SEE Youth Newsroom to start reporting immediately about different international, regional or national activities that will be suggested to them".

UNESCO and the European Union, DG Near, launched the second phase of the project “” in November 2019. Addressing the decline in trust of the civil society towards media in the region and building on the EU’s recommendations on combating disinformation online, the three-year project aims to support free, independent and pluralistic media, while empowering citizens to think critically about the information they receive through the media, especially social media.
