UNESCO organizes five-day Paper Conservation Training at The Toul Sleng Genocide Museum
UNESCO, in partnership with the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (TSGM), is organizing a five-day paper conservation Training-of-Trainers workshop, within the framework of UNESCO’s TSGM Archive Preservation and Digitization Project (TSGMAPD Project). The training is being held at the TSGM from 8 – 12 July 2019, and being conducted by paper-conservation expert Ms. Anne Lama.
18 trainees from three institutions, including Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, National Archive, and National Museum are participating in the training. The training is focused on introducing the participants to conservation principles and building capacities to sustainably restore and conserve TSGM archives. Topics covered in the training include aqueous cleaning and flattening of crumpled documents, stabilization of mechanical alterations, and physical protection for the more fragile documents.
The TSGMAPD project aims to preserve the archives of Khmer Rouge detention and execution center S-21, and to bring them to the public through a user-friendly crowd-sourcing website, particularly directed towards the young generation through a conflict-sensitive approach. The project, funded through generous support from the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), has digitized over 400,000 pages of archives, and the project website will be launched soon.
