On 18 May 2023, UNESCO Cairo Hydrology team met with the organizing team of the Cairo Water Week 2023 in the directorate of the Planning Sector at the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in the New Administrative Capitol to discuss UNESCO's contribution to the upcoming event.

The 2023 edition of the Cairo Water Week will be held in 2023 under the theme “Action on Water Adaptation and Sustainability” in coherence with the Action on Water Adaptation and Resilience (AWARe) initiative launched by Egypt during COP27.

The conference will include plenary sessions organized around the 6 main work streams of the AWARe initiative. The initiative aims to:

  1. decrease water losses worldwide and improve water supply
  2. promote mutually agreed, cooperative water adaptation action
  3. promote cooperation and interlinkages between water and climate action in order to achieve the 2030 agenda and in particular Sustainable Goal Six on water and sanitation

UNESCO, through its Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) and the Cairo office, is cooperating with the Government of Egypt on the work stream related to accounting for green water in water use planning, and the establishment of a Pan African Climate and Water Center. UNESCO Cairo participated in every single edition of the Cairo Water Week by organizing technical sessions, supporting student scientific competitions, and participating in plenary conference sessions.
