Valparaíso submits its application to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network

The application is a milestone in the public-private project "Puerto de Músicas," which brings together the Municipality of Valparaíso, Chile's Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, the Regional Music Industry Association (IMUVA), and Corfo's strategic programme "Valparaíso Creativo," aiming to position the city within this UNESCO network.
Valparaíso, known throughout Chile for its vibrant musical scene, continues its path through this candidacy to integrate music into its future development plan, as it forms part of the city's history and identity. The UNESCO nomination is a landmark in this plan.
This is Chile's second application to this UNESCO network. The city of Frutillar, in the Los Lagos region of southern Chile, was named the country's first Creative City in the field of music in 2017. The town has 17,500 inhabitants and annually receives 250,000 visitors who come to participate in the Musical Weeks and performances at Teatro del Lago. Such is the importance of cultural activities in Frutillar that music alone accounts for over 5% of the town's total annual revenue—more than 50 times the national average.
