The documentary material that makes up the archive and bibliographic collection on the internal armed conflict in custody of the CNMH (National Center for Historical Memory) brings together collections from various sources and territories – including exile – on the causes, events, actors, resistances, dialogues, and peace processes. The mentioned sources include: a) national governmental bodies; b) local organizations and communities of various populations, such as organizations acting as guarantors of the rights of victims of the internal armed conflict; and c) natural and legal persons who serve as evidence of the events.

As a protective measure, these documents have been identified, located, and registered. To ensure their accessibility, they've been classified, arranged, and described. The archive has been organized and fortified to safeguard custody and preservation, enabling its use by victims, researchers, and the general public, all within the framework of the rights to truth, justice, reparation, and nonrecurrence.

To date, the archive contains documents and evidence in various media and formats: both paper and digital, corresponding to approximately 495,532 records, highlighting the need to implement protection measures for their longterm preservation. It is important to note that the 495,532 records are distributed across 890 linear meters of paper format and approximately 1,654 terabytes of information in digital format.

Altering documents or omitting relevant information affects historical integrity and truth. Additionally, the instrumentalization of archives for political purposes can distort historical narratives and perpetuate impunity. It is worth noting that the Human Rights Archive Directorate at the NationalCenter for Historical Memory in Colombia records events related to internal violence and armed conflict, land restitution, forced displacement, dispossession,threats, symbolic reparations, resistance processes, legal proceedings, peacebuilding, massacres, torture, harassment, social mobilizations, and armed confrontations, among others. These records serve as evidence of human rights violations and violations of international humanitarian law. Therefore, this declaration serves as a protective measure to ensure the continuity and public access to records that bear witness to these situations and life stories of individuals, communities, and organizations, thereby guaranteeing transparency in archival management and access—an essential element for fostering societal trust

In compliance with Article 46, Title XI Document Conservation of Law 594 Ley General de Archivo (General Archives Law), which states that Public administration archives must implement an Integrated Conservation System (SIC) in each phase of the document´s life cycle, the Human Rights Archive of the Human Rights Archive Directorate of the CNMH has an Integrated ConservationSystem. This document guides the implementation of a series of preventive strategies and tools that guarantee the preservation of documentary material, regardless of its format, ensuring the physical integrity of all documentation from the moment of its production to its final disposition. The purpose of this system is to guarantee the preservation, conservation, and safekeeping of the country´s documentary heritage and historical memory.
