This is the core of the documentary fonds of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is considered as the most valuable, because of its nature and rarity. Its origin dates to a time in history during the process of formation of Latin American countries. The documents record the holder's activities in diplomatic positions in Spain and Mexico, as well as in Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. Faced with the new political configurations, the holder was concerned with collecting documents to study relations with neighbours, including boundary setting.

The collection Barão da Ponte Ribeiro  - brasilian diplomat (1795-1878) - comprises memoirs, opinions and maps - collected and produced by the holder - which prove territorial possession, and which were decisive, through treaties with neighbouring countries, in recognizing land rights inherited from Portugal. His importance in the Empire and the Republic in the settlement and defence of border issues persists to this day in documenting territorial claims of Latin American countries bordering Brazil. The holder's contribution is enduring, and the recognition of the Barão da Ponte Ribeiro Collection pays tribute to the work of a life dedicated to Brazil and the Americas.
