Black presence in the Archive: Luiz Gama, articulator of freedom (1830-1882)

Related Documents
This candidacy deals with the possibility of highlighting the participation of the abolitionist Luiz Gama in an important Brazilian historical period, through unique and, to a certain extent, unexplored documentation. The judicial processes in which Luiz Gama participated represent an opportunity to recover legal knowledge and notable cases about the process of slavery and abolition in the State of São Paulo, especially in Greater São Paulo, on the Paulista Coast and in inland cities such as Campinas and Piracicaba.
Furthermore, notable actions such as the Questão Neto, the largest liberation action for enslaved blacks recorded in America, were defended by Luiz Gama, who highlights the importance of heritage for this region of the world.
The documentation can be organized in two moments: the first reflects aspects of social interaction and the practice of slavery as an economic and social model. The second moment represents a transition in this dynamic due to the abolitionist movement promoted in the country.
The central figure in the activities described in the documents is the lawyer Luiz Gama, who worked to secure the release of illegally enslaved people, as well as to raise funds to purchase the freedom of those whose illegal enslavement could not be proven.
The documentation highlights the existence of quilombos in the city of São Paulo and the role of the enslaved and free black population in the creation and maintenance of the city.
