Educator Paulo Freire Fonds, 1921-1997
Paulo Freire (1921-1997) is considered the most important Brazilian educator of all times. To this day, his legacy crosses and dissolves borders. His ideas, originated from his experiences as a teacher and social activist, made him one of the most creative and genuine manifestations of the critical pedagogy that he himself had founded. His thought influenced various fields of knowledge and inserted the so-called popular education in the world history of education. He has created a theory of knowledge from an ethical-critical-political-educational perspective, and based on it, he conceived a methodology for adult literacy, having been designated as patron of Brazilian education law 12.612 of April 13, 2012.
The Ana MarÃa Araújo Freire and Paulo Freire Institute is the custodian of these documents, which constitute a fundamental reference for those who investigate the life and work of Paulo Freire, and for those who seek to contribute to keeping alive and reinventing his legacy. It is an extensive collection about topics such as popular education, youth and adult education and literacy, social movements, political education, ecopedagogy, among others.
The Pablo Freire fonds were inscribed on the Memory of the World Regional Register for Latin America and the Caribbean in 2015 and on the MoW International Register in 2017.
