“El Peruano” Official Journal, by Editora Perú – Period 1826-First semester of 1868
These issues of the Official Gazette "El Peruano" —the oldest newspaper in South America and the only living historical document bequeathed by the Liberator Simon Bolivar— were released between 1826 and the first half of 1868. "El Peruano" was created as an organ of dissemination of the then newly established Peruvian State. In the 19th century, it disseminated government decrees, Executive Branch orders, and all the rules that regulated the way of life of Peruvians, as well as foreign relations that the State promoted worldwide.
In this regard, its importance is evident because, through press reports and regulations, it provided essential information on the relations between Peru and the countries in the Americas during the first five decades of republican life. That is why the founding of "El Peruano" was a milestone, mainly in the history of Peruvian journalism and in Latin America in general. It was not just like the rest of newspapers, but became the faithful testimony of the independent existence of Peru and helped ratify this process through public opinion.
Today we can proudly say that, unlike other documents that cease to exist, this newspaper has endured over time and constitutes a unique and precious legacy in the long process of democratic consolidation and the development of the Peruvian nation.
