First printed documents of the River Plate. Vocabulary of the Guarani language, printed in the Santa MarÃa La Mayor Jesuit-Guarani mission in 1722
The Vocabulary of the Guaranà Language is part of the group of the first printed matter to come out of the RÃo de la Plata region, born from the native Jesuit-Guaranà printing press that operated from 1700 to 1727. This was a traveling printing press and its purpose was divided into several points such as favoring the evangelizing task carried out by the Jesuit fathers in the 30 reductions, teaching typographic art, showing Spain the aboriginal skill in these arts and making the Guarani language visible.
Made with types of metal, scarce paper brought from Europe, an apprentice workforce, a humid and jungle climate and since the books were for daily use by parents and Guarani, the few copies of these rare books exist, many times, in delicate state of conservation. In particular, the Vocabulary of the Guaranà Language of 1722, a work published for the first time in Spain by the Jesuit Father Antonio Ruiz de Montoya in 1640, was, together with the Art of the Guaranà Language of 1724, part of the books that expressed in writing the Guarani language that is still alive today; official language of Paraguay along with Castilian (Spanish), read and taught in schools in Argentina and Paraguay.
