Fond associated with the public and private life of Rudolph Amandus Philippi, a prolific and important scientist of the 19th century in Chile. This documentary heritage is a complete and complex set of documents about the naturalist.

The value of this heritage lies not only in its extent and variety of content, but also in the fact that the producer himself accumulated, received, and generated documentation based on his roles as scientist, academic, teacher and father. The documentation is therefore a faithful reflection of the wide-ranging aspects of Philippi's life, from his early years, when he lived in Italy and Germany, to his last days, on his deathbed, when he wrote correspondence to his family and friends.

The fond covers a wide range of documents, such as diaries, correspondence, travel diaries, watercolours, sketches, lithographs, scientific descriptions, notes, reports, and essays. This documentary diversity is organised into two sections, 21 series and 30 sub-series, giving rise to more than 64 notebooks, 157 booklets and around 9,000 folios. Most of the documentation is unpublished and still unknown in the region.

The fond is currently packed and stored in acid-free envelopes, folders and boxes in an environmentally controlled warehouse (with dehumidifier and air conditioning), but in a geographical location (Valdivia, Los Ríos Region), which has high daily fluctuations of Relative Humidity and Temperatures, and verymarked seasons: high rainfall and low temperatures during the winter. Therefore, Relative Humidity and Temperature are factors that must be controlled seasonally.

A climatic factor that could put the building structure in crisis (problems in downspouts and runoff) is flooding due to an abnormally rainy season. So, too, could be prolonged power outages due to storms. A disaster specific to the geographical location is an earthquake, with the presence of a fast-flowing river at a distance of 50 meters or so

This is especially supported by the patrimonial and economic value of the Philippi fund. Some ofhis illustrations have been privately auctioned for more than $10,000 US.
