The Liminal Manifesto is the flagship document of the movement for University Reform that started in Córdoba, Argentina, in June of 1918, and spread throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting student leadership in the processes of political democratisation that the countries of the region were going through.
Published in "La Gaceta Universitaria", gazette of the University Federation of Córdoba, the Manifesto promoted the principles of autonomy, co-government, extension, periodical faculty renewal and academic freedom, competitive examinations and free university education. These ideals materialized in a student movement with a strong Americanist spirit, whose impact transcended the university in their fight for a profound transformation of society towards democratic ideas and practices, where university students would take on a role of responsibility.
The Reform marked the political life of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean with the emergence of student organizations that bred some of the most notable politicians and intellectuals of the 20th century. Its principles were adopted by subsequent student movements and are still valid as the foundations of the relationship between universities and society.
The Manifesto was printed in "La Gaceta de la Federación Universitaria de Córdoba", on June 21st 1918, and has had a lasting influence on the youth of all Latin America.
