Manuel Álvarez Bravo (1902-2002), a pioneer of artistic photography in Mexico, is one of the emblematic photographers of Latin America and one of the most prominent of the 20th century. The themes of his work allude to the human condition beyond geographical limits. His aesthetic, both classical and modern, drew on autochthonous Mexican expressions but also explored cubism and abstract composition. Represented in the most important photographic collections in the world (Getty Museum in Los Angeles; MoMA; George Eastman House; Victoria and Albert Museum in London; Library and Museum of Modern Art in Paris), his legacy consists of 37,000 negatives, only 10% of which are known.

This archive (inscribed on the Memory of the World International Register and on the Regional Register for Latin America and the Caribbean in 2017), is complemented by a collection of publications, research and critical review documents assembled by the photographer, all of which are original and in the custody of the newly created ARCMAB (Manuel Álvarez Bravo Archive). Between 1959 and 2012, the archive remained as it had been organized by its creator in his residence in Mexico City, and therefore its provenance and authenticity are fully verified.
