It was Pablo Neruda himself (1904-1973) who, through his testimony, captured by writer Alfredo Cardona, commented that the objective of writing the "Canto General" was to ‘architect’ (sic) a poem for all of our America. Following Cardona, the poems constitute a set of songs to the land, to the workers, to the hurting and betrayed race, but without losing the hope of achieving peace. In other words, the songs deal with the struggle of the American peoples for their freedom. It could be said that he captured the essence of mid-20th century America.

That bitter and agitated song, created from great geographical leaps, meditated on in jail, intuited in the midst of anxiety, but at the same time happy, healthy and optimistic, was captured in a stupendous edition achieved in 1950 by "Talleres Gráficos de la Nación", thanks to the work of designer Miguel Prieto, with the artistic collaboration of Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, with whom the author shared socialist ideas. Four artists gathered with the same objective. This edition uniquely gathers all the elements to be considered one of the great and last typographical works of the 20th century in America.
