Private Library of General José de San Martin
The National Library of Peru houses private collections of great relevance for the Peruvian and American culture. Among them, the books from the private collection of General Jose de San Martin stand out, made up of 74 bibliographic units (1499-1814) were part of the donation he made to the National Library in 1821. These books were part of the political project of the San Martin, who considered that access to knowledge would ensure the freedom of the American people.
The importance of this materials lies in the repercussion they had in for the dissemination of enlightened thought in the Americans society of the 19th century. A large part of these materials stands out for its conditions of recovered heritage, being plundered in the context of the War of the Pacific (1879-1883) and restituted by the Chilean state in 2007 and 2017.
The interest in knowing the intellectual education of the liberator generated great interest in the books of his private library, which is why academic events and exhibitions were organized nationally and internationally. In this sense, the National Library, knowing the relevance of these materials for Peru and South America, achieved their declaration as Cultural Heritage of the Nation between 2013 and 2021. Likewise, this 2022 was incorporated into the Register of the Peruvian Memory of the World Committee, by means of certificate N° 0029-2022-CPMM-UNESCO.
