Sam Selvon Collection, XXth Century

Related Documents
Samuel "Sam" Dickson Selvon (1923-1994) was born in San Fernando, Trinidad. Selvon was one of the leaders of the post-colonial Caribbean literary renaissance which began in the 1950s. Other writers of this renaissance included George Lamming, V. S. Naipaul and Derek Walcott.
Selvon’s most important contribution to the development of an Anglo-Caribbean literary canon was the privileging of Caribbean dialects in his work, such as his groundbreaking The Lonely Londoners. He was one of the first writers to shift from writing entirely in standard English to extensively including Caribbean idioms, particularly that of Trinidad and Tobago, in his work. The significance of this collection is that it provides evidence of the work of a scribe who contributed to the development of the Caribbean’s post-colonial literature. The collection includes correspondence (including communication from persons who contributed to the region’s early post-colonial literary renaissance); poems; plays; short stories; articles; non-fiction works of Selvon; reviews; photographs; and newspaper clippings―all accumulated by Selvon. The many unpublished items in this fonds provide additional windows for academicians to assess the scholarship of Selvon.
