Series of State Terrorism during the Dictatorship Period – Southern Cone (Series #3 of the Justice and Human Rights Movement Fund.)
The serie State Terrorism in the Dictatorship Period – Southern Cone represents one of the main activities of the "Movimiento de Justicia y Derechos Humanos" (MJDH). It brings together documents related to the collection of evidence of the crimes committed by the civil-military dictatorial regimes that developed in the region from the mid-20th century.
The civil-military dictatorships that took place in Latin America took place in different situations. Brazil was one of the first countries to establish a military regime as a form of government in 1964 with the overthrow of João Goulart. While in Uruguay the regime was established in 1973, after the consolidation of the State Security Law in 1972 by the Uruguayan Congress, which made it clear that it was against the activities and demonstrations of the Tupamaros, and that they would suffer for the actions committed.
This serie also portrays the correspondence between the victims and relatives of these crimes and the MJDH, in the search for reparation and justice, without forgetting the record of the testimonies and statements of the people who suffered serious human rights violations. Consequently, the documents in this series are like mouthpieces of the memory of various social groups, since, in addition to transmitting information, they are bearers of the symbolic trajectory of groups and individuals. A memory as a resource for justice and truth, as a symbol for absent memory, for oblivion.
