教科文组织全球公民论坛在曼谷开幕
The first international Forum on Global Citizenship Education opened in Bangkok, Thailand, today. Organized by UNESCO, the Forum is based on the premise that teaching children how to read and write is not enough, and builds on the momentum created by the Global Education First Initiative (GEFI), a campaign launched by the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, in September 2012 to deliver on the promise of Education for All.
Recognizing the power of education to transform lives and build more sustainable, peaceful and prosperous societies, the Secretary-General made Global Citizenship Education one of GEFI’s three priorities.
“I commend the International Forum on Global Citizenship Education for advancing this goal. By harnessing science, technology and innovation, and promoting compassion, care and concern for our human family, education can prepare young people to help solve the interconnected challenges of the 21st century. Let us continue to work together to help ensure all young people can grow up to be global citizens,” Ban Ki-moon said.
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said we live in an interconnected world of finite resources where the challenges we face are global by nature. “By facilitating an international dialogue on global citizenship, UNESCO aims to explore how education systems can better empower students to think and act as responsible global citizens by ensuring that they acquire shared values and competences to understand and care for the well-being of their peers, their communities and their planet. This is how education can be a true force for peace, human dignity and sustainable development,” Ms Bokova said.
Participants at the forum will share good practices in the emerging area of Global Citizenship Education, and discuss trends and innovations. Experts will also identify concrete actions to be taken at national, regional and global level to push forward quality Global Citizenship Education.
Young people will play a key role in the Forum, with the Global Education First Initiative’s Youth Advisory Group leading the discussion on youth and community engagement, one of three focus areas; which also includes pedagogical issues and the education sector; sustainable development and peace, rights and conflict prevention.
