• Next Monday, August 26 at 9:15 am, a round table entitled Symmetry. A meeting of astronomy, art and particle physics will be held with authorities and artists to identify new challenges, lines of cooperation and shared projects in the areas of science and culture in Chile.

Cross-cutting policies for science and culture, and programs that link creativity and innovation to the global sustainable development agenda are of increasing interest and importance. These and other topics will be discussed in the round table entitled Symmetry. A meeting of astronomy, art and particle physics, to be held next Monday, August 26, at 9:15 am at the ALMA Observatory in Santiago (Alonso de Córdova 3107, Vitacura).

The activity is part of Symmetry, an artistic-scientific exchange program that invites artists from Chile and Switzerland to a shared residency program in some of the most extraordinary scientific research centers in the world. The initiative is organized in conjunction with Arts at CERN, ALMA, ESO, the Chilean Corporation of Video and Electronic Arts, the New Media Area of the Chilean Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The initiative is backed by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, as part of its “COINCIDENCIA - Swiss & South American cultural exchange” program.

The meeting will include the participation of the Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister, Consuelo Valdés, and the Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation Minister, Andrés Couve, who participate in the first panel entitled Creativity & innovation: exploring the link between culture and science.  Silvia Rucks, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Chile, will moderate.

This will be followed by a talk entitled Experiences: dialogs between artists and scientific centers, in which  Chilean artist Nicole L’Huillier and Swiss artist Alan Bogana will share the initial results of Symmetry, after having visited the European Laboratory for Particle Physics of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, based in Geneva), and the ALMA and Paranal astronomical observatories, located in San Pedro de Atacama and Taltal, respectively. Enrique Rivera, Director of the Chilean Corporation of Video and Electronic Arts, and Bárbara Núñez, Press Officer of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), will moderate the panel. 

The meeting will also include presentations from Paulina Bocaz, Representative in Chile for Associated Universities Inc., the North American partner of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA); Claudio Melo, Representative of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile; María Angélica Vial, Regional Coordinator of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia; Claudia Uribe, Director of the Regional Bureau for Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago) and Representative for Chile; Valeria Foncea Rubens, Education and Public Outreach Officer for ALMA; and Simón Perez Wilson, New Media Area Coordinator of the Chilean Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.

CCHV, la Corporación Chilena de Video y Artes Electrónicas, desde 1993 desarrolla investigaciones, producciones y exposiciones basadas en la relación Arte y Ciencia. Es responsable de la organización de la Bienal de Artes Mediales de Chile, que en su decimocuarta edición tendrá lugar en 20 espacios de Santiago entre septiembre de 2019 y enero de 2020.

ALMA, el Atacama Large Millimeter / submilimeter Array es el radiotelescopio más potente del mundo, ubicado a 5.000 metros de altitud en las cercanías de San Pedro de Atacama. ALMA es una asociación entre ESO (en representación de sus estados miembros), NSF (EE.UU.) y NINS (Japón), junto con NRC (Canadá), MOST y ASIAA (Taiwán), y KASI (República de Corea), en cooperación con la República de Chile. 

ESO, el Observatorio Europeo Austral es una organización de investigación intergubernamental de 16 naciones para la astronomía terrestre. Creado en 1962, ESO ha proporcionado a los astrónomos instalaciones de investigación de vanguardia y acceso a los cielos del hemisferio sur. Sus observatorios se encuentran en el norte de Chile.

CERN, la Organización Europea para la Investigación Nuclear es un organismo donde físicos e ingenieros investigan la estructura fundamental del universo. Establecido en 2011, el Programa de Artes en CERN incluye al arte en la vanguardia de la investigación científica y fomenta la creación de nuevos conocimientos en las artes al extender la práctica de los artistas a la investigación fundamental.

Pro Helvetia es el Consejo Suizo de las Artes, que en el marco de Coincidencia, su programa de intercambio cultural entre Sudamérica y Suiza (2017-2020), busca facilitar el acceso de los miembros de la escena artística suiza a plataformas profesionales en América del Sur, con el fin de fomentar los intercambios culturales y dar lugar a nuevas asociaciones.

Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio. Su principal objetivo es colaborar con el jefe de Estado en el diseño, formulación e implementación de políticas, planes y programas que contribuyan al desarrollo cultural y patrimonial de manera armónica y equitativa en todo el territorio nacional.

El Ministerio está regido por los principios de diversidad cultural, democracia y participación, reconocimiento cultural de los pueblos indígenas, respeto a la libertad de creación y valoración social de creadores y cultores, además del reconocimiento a las culturas territoriales, el respeto a los derechos de cultores y creadores, y la memoria histórica.

La Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) trata de establecer la paz mediante la cooperación internacional en materia de educación, ciencia y cultura. Los programas de la UNESCO contribuyen al logro de los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible definidos en el Programa 2030, aprobado por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en 2015. En Chile la UNESCO tiene asentada su Oficina Regional de Educación para América Latina y el Caribe que también funge como representación oficial de la organización en Chile.
