Highlights
High Level Segment : (re)Thinking the Commons, Acting Together
The high-level segment of UNESCO's General Conference will focus on how the commons should be thought of and protected in the context of the major disruptions the world is currently experiencing, with a particular emphasis on climate disruption and digital transformation.
it will be organized in two parts:
- 3 - 4 p.m.: An inaugural lecture by Dipesh Chakrabarty on global public goods and how they need to be rethought in the face of the major disruptions the world is facing.
- 4 - 6 p.m.: A high-level session on partnerships bringing together heads of state/government, CEOs, heads of multilateral organizations, civil society leaders and other eminent people to show how UNESCO is leveraging partnerships to address climate disruption and digital transformation in a way that benefits people and the planet.
- 6:30-7:30 pm: Protecting biodiversity, reconciling all forms of life: the example of the Amazon Biosphere Reserves Project

BienalSur Latin American Contemporary Art Fair
Among the artwork displayed both inside and outside the premises of UNESCO, a Special Edition of the BienalSur Latin American Contemporary Art Fair will present a new generation of African and Afro-descendant artists such as Januario Jano, Hicham Benohoud, Monica de Miranda, Kapwani Kiwanga, Aline Motta, Rosana Paulino and Ishola Akpo. (The inauguration of the exposition will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.in Hall Picasso).
Staff Associations of UNESCO
Throughout the General Conference, you will find the stands of UNESCO at Mall (Floor -1, in front of Room X). The main objectives of Staff associations are to safeguard the collective and individual rights of its members in their professional capacity, to preserve and strengthen the unity of the Secretariat as a body of international civil servants, ensure satisfactory working conditions, improve staff members' status and morale, aid those in difficulty, and organize cultural and recreational activities for UNESCO staff.

The First Lady of Ukraine, H.E. Olena Zelenska, addressed the 194 Member States as a special guest in the Plenary. She inaugurated the 鈥淯krainian shelving鈥 with the Director-General at UNESCO鈥檚 library, and visited the mural created by the artist Christian Gu茅my to pay tribute to Ukraine in the Hall Miro.

During the High-level Ministerial Dialogue on Education for Peace, key highlights include the organization鈥檚 steadfast commitment to peace education as stressed in Director-General鈥檚 opening remarks, emphasizing that education for peace is at the core of UNESCO鈥檚 mandate. This was followed by an engaging conversation between artist Michelangelo Pistoletto and UNESCO鈥檚 Assistant Director-General for Education, advocating for the cultivation of creativity in educational settings as a means of resolving conflict. The dialogue concluded with an award ceremony of the international school competition entitled 鈥Youth for Peace Award.鈥 Ministers from around the world then took the stage, delivering statements that reiterated the significance of educational policies in promoting international understanding, human rights and the appreciation of diversity, all while emphasizing education鈥檚 pivotal role in promoting peace, respect, and combatting hate speech in all forms. Furthermore, Ministers of Education collectively voiced their commitment to UNESCO鈥檚 Revised 1974 Recommendation on Education for Peace and Human Rights, International Understanding, Cooperation, Fundamental Freedoms, Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development.
The annual SDG4 High-Level Steering Committee Leaders Meeting served as an opportunity to report on country progress towards SDG4 targets and to review transformative actions of countries as part of the follow up to the Transforming Education Summit. Financing for education formed an integral part of the deliberations, addressing the topics of improving multilateral financing and strengthening domestic financing of education. Progress on thematic work strands have also been discussed, such as the recommendations of the High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession and the global youth work. The meeting ended with the announcement of the 2024-25 membership and the approval of a set of decisions that mark the path for Committee鈥檚 work for the coming years.
UNESCO joined forces with the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 (TTF), the Varkey Foundation, and Dubai Cares to host an unprecedented event to shine a spotlight on teachers. UNESCO and the Teacher Task Force presented the highlights of the first Global Report on Teachers during the award ceremony of the 2023 laureate of The Varkey Foundation鈥檚 Global Teacher Prize. This event was composed of two parts, including "Introducing the highlights of UNESCO and Teacher Task Global Report on Teachers" and the "Global Teacher Prize" in the presence of Mr. Sunny Varkey, founder of the Varkey Foundation and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Education Partnerships.
