The magazine includes articles, photographs and publications that recreate and demonstrate the social, economic, political and cultural trends between 1941 and 1975 in the southern Bani region. Its content represents a source for scholars and researchers of social movements and the way of life in small cities and rural areas of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean in the second half of the XXth Century. 420 issues were published in 8 ½ x 11-inch format, printed in black and white. There are hundreds of pages, articles and literary works by important writers, researchers and professionals from various areas, not only from Banà and the Dominican Republic, but also from other countries in America and the world. The collection reflects the southern region during three significant historical periods: the Trujillo dictatorship, the war of April 1965 and the second invasion of the United States, and the start of democracy.
Páginas Banilejas has been instrumental in sharing the works of renowned artists and intellectuals from different countries, some of them from various Latin American cities, who were correspondents and collaborators: for example, Nélida Cherara (Argentine journalist and writer); Mauricio G. Obelar (Uruguayan writer and journalism teacher, romantic author); John D. Byrne (Cuban doctor and political educator of the time); Ana Gómez Mayorga (a teacher and education supervisor from Mexico dedicated to writing about the aesthetics of women); Rafael Parra (a prominent young Colombian journalist and writer); and Don Luis Villaronga from Puerto Rico.
This magazine was considered an anthology of what the people of Banà and the southern region wrote, and what was written about them and their lifestyle. The Perelló Cultural Centre, a non-profit organisation, is the custodian of the collection and dedicated three years to collecting and preserving the magazine issues. The Centre has managed to digitize 100% of this collection to make the cultural, social and political heritage contained in it accessible.
