Enrique Solano López Collection

Registration Year: 2015
ID: 119/2015
Institution: Biblioteca Nacional del Paraguay.

This is the most important and complete library fonds on the topic of the Paraguayan War, a military conflict between three countries (Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay) and Paraguay. The fonds includes books, magazines, brochures, war reports, collections of articles and news that appeared in the foreign press, the most complete known collection from the "Cabichuí" newspaper, lithographic collections such as that of Methfessel, plans, maps and manuscripts. In this respect, it is entirely irreplaceable. In relation to the bibliographic collection, some of the titles may be found separately in other libraries, but there is no doubt that this is the most important collection of publications on the topic of the Paraguayan War dating from the period of the conflict.

"Cabichuí" was a bilingual weekly newspaper published between 1867 and 1868, which contained satirical illustrations and texts in relation to the events of the War of the Triple Alliance and in particular against the Allied countries. The workers, writers, and artists of the "Cabichuí" were also soldiers, and the first issues saw the light in the Army Graphic Workshops located in Paso Pucú, department of Neembucú, making it the campaign newspaper par excellence.

It is important to highlight the current regional scope of this collection in the framework of the commemorations of the 150 years of the start of the war, since it is one of the least known collections in the region, which could contribute significantly to further the knowledge of historians and researchers in the area about the Paraguayan viewpoint of the conflict. The collection was of great significance in the period after the Chaco War, between 1939 and 1942, when it was a key source of consultation for the members appointed to the “Commission on the Boundaries for the Defence of Chaco”.
