The Network of Information and Counterinformation of the Military Regime in Brazil, 1964-1985 is contained in 17 fonds that are under the custody of various archival institutions in the country. Along with other files generated by public and private entities, these collections can be consulted through the “Reference Centre on Political Struggles in Brazil— Revealed Memories”, a joint effort by the State and society to recover and preserve the memory of this period and to stimulate reflection on citizenship, democracy and human rights.

As an outcome of the 1964 military coup, Brazilian President João Goulart was deposed, and arrests and protests followed. Through Institutional Act No. 1 of April 9, political rights were suspended. Building on an existing structure, an intelligence service was set up to protect and support the regime. Thus, on June 13, 1964, the National Information Service (SNI) was created. Out of the 4,841 official penalties imposed by the military regime, 2,990 were given in 1964, many of them based on recommendations or information from SNI. During the military regime, exception legislation was created and a new Constitution and the Law of National Security were passed. Over six thousand people were convicted or sued based on the Law of National Security. Fifty thousand people underwent police interrogation, thirty thousand were tortured and hundreds died, many people are still reported missing; and thousands of citizens were denounced, charged and convicted by the Military Justice.

Under the coordination of the National Archives, "Memórias Reveladas” promotes and disseminates studies, research and reflections on the theme, through the National Network of Archival Information and Cooperation. The database available at the "Memórias Reveladas" website provides information and a digital copy of the documents referring to the investigations and diligences of the military police, cancellation of rights, control of individuals, associations and organizations considered suspicious, military agreements, and other themes. The process of political liberation, the role of the resistance to the dictatorship and the efforts to build and consolidate democracy are also recorded in the database. The holdings are accessible to everyone because they represent an important testimony to world history, not only because in South America the military governments established strong cooperation bonds, but also because military governments in our hemisphere and in other parts of the world were implemented with the collaboration and consent of several developed nations on the pretext of avoiding the communist risk. For Brazil, the availability of these fonds on the web represents a cornerstone in the democratisation of the access to information and a tool for building citizenship and an equitable society in line with the motto of the Centre: "lest it be forgotten, lest it happen again”.
