Inscribed on the Memory of the World International Register in 2003 and on the MoW Regional Register for Latin America and the Caribbean in 2011, this collection has a total of eight hundred recordings, some of them in takes or versions of different matrices, and was gathered in Uruguay, Argentina, Spain and France. Record copies were acquired through purchases or donations, or were exchanged by the collector. It is one of the most complete collections of Carlos Gardel's original records in the world.

The collection covers the period of the singer's beginnings as an "interpreter of native music—estilo, milonga, zamba, vidalita, cifra, vals criollo— both as a soloist and as a member of various vocal groups, of a similar telluric nature". It also includes his Tango song (music and lyrics, around 1916-1917) whose expressive model would become the founding school for the vast majority of singers of this genre that followed him over time. Before Gardel, tango was sung in the style of the zarzuela, but his style of vocal phrasing consolidated an independent form of expression, detached from the initial archaisms.

The interest of this collection lies in the importance of the performer, and in the breadth of his career in different musical forms and styles: his different periods and the acoustic recordings up to 1926 and electric recordings from that date on. As Boris Puga puts it: “The stature of Carlos Gardel, an exceptional singer and fine melodist, has grown over the years not only in the River Plate, but also worldwide”, through the contribution of several collectors in various continents.
