Related Documents

Inscribed on the Memory of the World Regional Register for Latin America and the Caribbean in 2014 and on the MoW International Register in 2017, the Villa Ocampo Documentation Centre consists of the library and personal archive of Victoria Ocampo (1890-1979), and the archive of the magazine and publishing house, "Sur", given on loan to UNESCO by "Fundación Sur" (created by Victoria Ocampo herself).

The holding of both consolidated archives is made up of more than 11,000 books, 2,500 periodicals, 1,000 photographs, papers, manuscripts, records, scores, a complete collection of Sur magazine issues, bound and annotated by Victoria Ocampo, a collection of the books of Sur Publishing House that are preserved, and other documents. This collection offers an exceptional opportunity to understand the Latin American intellectual development of the 20th century.

The Villa Ocampo documentary collection constitutes a unique and irreplaceable testimony of the production process of one of the most important Spanish language literary magazines of the 20th century. The Sur magazine and publishing house, under the direction of Victoria Ocampo, became a true bridge between cultures and a forum for writing and reading that gave shape to a vast intellectual circle that intervened in the great debates of the time.

From very distant regions of the world, men and women such as Barthes, Borges, Sartre, Huxley, Gandhi, De Sica, De Gaulle, Lacan, Cortázar, Breton, Malraux, Gide, Mistral, Stravinsky and Le Corbusier were –among others– the interlocutors and producers of the documentary collection gathered in Villa Ocampo.
