Busara Promotions aims to promote youth empowerment, gender equality, and professionalization in the live music industry in East Africa, by: 1) equipping young women professionals with essential skills and opportunities; 2) providing training for young music professionals to access internation markets and festivals; 3) fostering connections through networking and mentorship programmes.

How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?

Demonstrating a more balanced South-North and South-South flow of cultural goods and services and increased international mobility of artists and cultural professionals:

The project will support training programmes in the music industry, fostering exposure to international markets, and promoting increased mobility, exchanged, and collaboration.

Increasing women’s representation as creators and producers of cultural expressions through strengthened professional networks and capacity development:

The project will support targeted training programmes for women cultural professionals and musicians, while creating opportunities for enhanced representation of women as creators and producers.

Main activities

  • Increasing international access: Training 150 young musicians and music managers to access international markets and festival.
  • Supporting women in the music industry: Training 20 young women in festival production and technical skills for cultural management; mentoring 10 women artists through a collaborative programme with internationally acclaimed artists; showcasing 20 women musicians or women-led bands at Sauti za Busara, achieving 30% representation at the festival.
  • Knowledge and network building: Strengthening the knowledge and professional networks of 160 emerging and established professional in the African music sector through networking and panels at the Sauti za Busara festival.
  • Awareness and education: Showcasing good practices for reducing the gender gap through a media campaign featuring influential moderators to reach a broad audience.
