Presentation

The Policy Studies Institute aims to create a supportive ecosystem for the growth of children’s literature and youth empowerment by: 1) mapping the sector to identify opportunities and challenges; 2) enhancing stakeholder capacities to drive development, 3) raising public awareness and advocating for the importance of children’s literature, and 4) fostering dialogue and networking to build stronger collaborations within the sector.

How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?

Demonstrating cross-sectoral cooperation in cultural policymaking and implementation.
The project will foster cross-sectoral collaboration in cultural policymaking by engaging educators, authors, publishers, policymakers, and community representatives to shape policy and practice collectively.

Applying innovation and new business models for the creation, production, distribution of and access to diverse cultural goods and services.
The project will support sustainable methods for creating, producing, and distributing children’s literature, including digital platforms and local channels.

Addressing critical capacity development needs relating to creation production and distribution.
The project will address critical capacity gaps by assessing existing capabilities and implementing targeted training programmes for stakeholders.

Widening participation in creation, production and distribution of cultural goods and services for previously excluded regions and social groups.
The project will support participation in children’s literature ecosystem by empowering authors and illustrators from marginalized communities through workshops, mentorship, and advocacy for inclusive policies.

Main activities

  • Comprehensive assessment: Mapping the children’s literature ecosystem across Ethiopia’s seven regions and their unique achievements, challenges and opportunities to aid in subsequent interventions.
  • Policy dialogue and report: Facilitating exchanges on children’s literature policy to aid the development of policies and initiatives to support the children’s literature ecosystem.
  • Capacity strengthening: Training children’s literature stakeholders in content development, publication processes, marketing, and policy advocacy to sustainably improve the quality, diversity and impact of children's literature across the country.
  • Awareness raising: Highlighting the importance of children's literature and effect policy change through media, local engagement, advocacy initiatives, regional conferences, and the establishment of children's literature centers.
