Presentation

The Dundas Civic Centre aims to develop and professionalize the local theatre industry by: 1) building the skills of theatre professionals, including in business principles; 2) elaborating a manual of good practices for theatre professionals; 3) developing policy recommendations and enhancing the governance of the sector.

How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?

Addressing critical capacity development needs for the cultural and creative industries, contributing to their sustainable development:

The project will support the strengthening of creative, technical, and business skills of theatre professionals at the local level with an inclusive approach targeted to gender equality, disadvantaged communities and youth.

Developing innovation and new business models for the creation, production, distribution of and access to diverse cultural goods and services:

The project will support the identification of good practices in terms of developing innovative business models for the theatre sector, based on an exploratory pilot methodology.

Strengthening the role of civil society in cultural policy making and implementation:

The project will support the elaboration of policy recommendations by civil society for the theatre sector. The project’s methodology includes partnering with relevant institutions to revise and disseminate the policy recommendations.

Main activities

  • Practitioner training: Organizing workshops, apprenticeships and master classes for theatre practitioners to strengthen their creative and technical skills through specialized training in areas like choreography, directing, lighting, stage management, musical direction, stage combat and design.
  • Model productions: Modeling ways of generating returns on investment through three fully professional and paid theatre productions of varying scales, which are then analyzed to verify investment outcomes and identify solutions.
  • Tool development: Elaborating a manual of good practices and accompanying website for the theatre sector in The Bahamas.
  • Policy communication: Bolstering the government’s capacity to support professional theater by registering project participants in the government’s database of cultural practitioners and creative workers and by crafting policy recommendations.
