The AlMahrousa Foundation for Development and Participation aims to foster an enabling environment for street arts and youth groups, promoting sustainable development, through: 1) the mapping of street theatre practices and stakeholders; 2) capacity building on policy advocacy; 3) interactive practices to enhance social inclusion and community engagement; 4) policy dialogue between youth groups and decision-makers.

How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?

Strengthening processes and mechanisms of public policymaking and implementation:

The project will support structural reforms by encouraging collaboration among street theatre artists, civil society organizations, policymakers and institutional stakeholders.

Strengthening the role of civil society in cultural policy making and implementation:

The project will support youth empowerment for policy dialogue and advocacy.

Addressing critical capacity development needs relating to creation, production, and distribution:

The project will support comprehensive capacity-building programmes, focusing on developing advocacy skills, tools and tactics, and fostering collaboration with NGOs, human rights organizations and cultural leaders.

Main activities

  • Research: Preparing a research paper on street theatre groups in Cairo and Alexandria.
  • Capacity building: Strengthening the capacities of five selected street theatre groups through tailored training programs, targeting participants aged 18–30 with a gender balance of 65% female and 35% male.
  • Youth engagement: Expanding opportunities for youth engagement in street art theatre through two performances addressing social issues and three policy dialogue sessions which will foster engagement between youth, decision-makers and cultural stakeholders.
  • Institutional partnership: Preparing a Memorandum of Understanding to be signed with five cultural and historical centers to adopt and provide support to five youth street theatre groups and integrate them into their cultural programming.
  • Stakeholder dialogue and advocacy: Reinforcing stakeholder engagement in policy dialogue and advocacy through three hearing sessions between decision-makers and street theatre groups to identify challenges, two expert meetings bringing together policy experts and decision-makers to address these challenges, four dialogue sessions with policy makers to discuss these findings and a digital advocacy campaign to drive policy changes.
