Presentation
The Division of Culture within the Prime Minister’s Office proposes to integrate culture in the Barbadian government’s national strategy by: 1) developing an inclusive national cultural policy that ensures representation of all sectors of Barbadian society; 2) mapping cultural industries to capture the role of culture in development.
How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?
Strengthens cross-sectoral cooperation in cultural policy making. Representatives from different government entities, such as Ministries of Tourism, Commerce and Finance, will be part of the steering committee on the revision of the national cultural policy and mapping of cultural industries.
Reinforces mechanisms for public policy making and implementation. The project will design a participatory and evidence-based cultural policy, as well as a 5-year action plan that includes a mechanism for monitoring its implementation.
Strengthens the role of civil society in cultural policymaking. The project will ensure the active participation of civil society organizations in the policymaking process. A task force, which will include representatives of cultural organizations and associations, will be established to monitor the implementation of the cultural policy as well as its evaluation.
Main activities
- ​​​​​Provide training on cultural data collection and interpretation to key cultural stakeholders and government agencies.
- Collect data through national consultations with cultural professionals, as well as through a cultural survey.
- Establish a technical steering committee to guide the revision of the existing 2010 Cultural Policy.
- Implement national consultations and focus groups.
